As an editor of academic papers and articles, I would interpret “intensively” in your ultimate citation as indicating that these nanostructures have been studied in depth, whereas “extensively” informs us that numerous studies were undertaken during the decade in question. In other words,
“intensively” reflects degree and “extensively” frequency
